Curly Lake Trail
Southwestern Montana, Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest.
This trail is the long and main route of the Curly Lake Loop. The trail itself climbs a large ridge into Curly Lake basin, then climbs to an alpine plateau with huge views and a massive descent. The trail contours all the way north to connect to the Rock Creek Trail. This is a long trail with many technical sections and steep grades, on the way up and down, so be prepared with water and a snack!

Essex Creek Trail
Northwestern Montana, Flathead National Forest.
The west half of this trail is not typically ridden by mountain bikers. The east half from the divide down to the South Boulder Road is the final descent of the Curly Lake Loop and is a fantastic trail. It is loose and rocky most often with fast and open sections up higher and smoother, flowy sections near the creek bottom and a few tight switchbacks near the bottom.
